Project: Kingfisher Eco-Scool
Location: Oldham
Value: £1.2m

A commission to design a new build sustainable standalone classroom facility within the grounds of Kingfisher School in Oldham. The aim was to produce a proposal with a detailed energy strategy aiming to produce a ‘zero net CO2’ building to maximise efficiency and minimise lifetime operational costs. A broad portfolio of renewable energy systems have been combined to demonstrate the viability of sustainable power.

Our design response comprises of a single ‘classroom’ sized room for children with special educational needs, up to the age of 11 years, in the grounds of an existing school and is to cater for use as a meeting space for community groups. Additional facilities include WC areas, generous and flexible storage and a kitchen all to be provided within a fully accessible environment. External works were also designed to provide areas for school children to grow plants and vegetables, study flora and fauna in a wildlife area and see how energy and natural resources can be produced and used. This includes a fully operational nursery where the local community can visit and buy plants at cost price that have been propagated and grown on-site.
