Project: Courtyards
Location: Heady Hill Housing Estate, Heywood
Value: £120k
Following consultation with the residents, the courtyards to three apartment blocks on the Heady Hill estate were refurbished. We worked together with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Groundwork and Heywood NDC to realise the project.
The new courtyards incorporate communal washing drying areas and binstores accommodating both wheelie bins and recycling bins. The curved walls and block paved areas demark a pleasant seating area outside the back doors to the apartments and a place for residents to place their own planters. Planting beds and tree pits around the perimeter bring colour and life back into the courtyard spaces.
Heady Hill suffers from infestation of Horsetail weed, which is able to grow through tarmac and had contributed to the degradation of the old courtyard surface. Working with specialists TCM R&D, we incorporated measures to eradicate the horsetail weed from the courtyards and a membrane was laid beneath the surface to prevent re-growth.
Feedback from the residents following completion has been very positive, they are very pleased with their new communal areas.
The courtyard refurbishments are part of a wider range of improvements being implemented throughout Heywood by Heywood New Deal for Communities.
